According to a recent study reported by Fox News, acupuncture may provide relief for older adults suffering from chronic back pain. The National Institutes of Health funded research that compared traditional medical treatments, such as medications or physical therapy, with these treatments plus acupuncture.
The study involved 800 participants aged 65 and older, all of whom had experienced chronic low back pain for at least three months. Participants were divided into groups receiving usual care, up to 15 acupuncture sessions over three months, or up to 21 sessions, including maintenance treatments over six months.
The findings revealed that those receiving acupuncture reported significant reductions in pain and improvements in physical function compared to those who received only usual care. Researchers noted that these benefits persisted at both six- and 12-month assessments. Acupuncture also seemed to reduce anxiety symptoms associated with chronic pain.
Acupuncture, a practice rooted in traditional Chinese medicine, involves inserting fine needles into specific points on the body. The study's authors suggest that it offers a safer, less invasive alternative to some common treatments for back pain in older adults. As always, consult your healthcare provider before making changes to your treatment plan.
